What’s new in dementia? Biomarkers, treatments, and research opportunities now and coming soon. Learning objectives: What is the difference is between dementia, mild cognitive impairment, and normal forgetfulness? What are the most common causes of dementia? How is a diagnosis of dementia made? New research findings from the field National and local research infrastructure Are we getting closer to a blood test for Alzheimer’s? When will we have a treatment?



Dr. James Noble was born and raised in Atlanta and is a 2002 graduate of the Emory University School of Medicine. Since graduating Emory he has trained and worked at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, where he completed medicine internship, neurology residency, specialty training in aging & dementia, and a master's degree in epidemiology. He is now an Associate Professor of Neurology in the Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer’s Disease and the Aging Brain at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. His clinical, research, outreach, advocacy, and education efforts are focused on modifiable risk factors of cognitive aging. At Columbia he is the clinical core leader of the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and directs several projects funded by the National Institute of Aging. He is co-editor of the 14th edition of standard text Merritt’s Neurology (published in 2021).


He authored the book “Navigating Life with Dementia” (Oxford University Press/American Academy of Neurology, published in June 2022 as part of their Brain & Life series); many points from the book will be covered in this presentation.

In 2010 he co-founded Arts & Minds, a non-profit organization which provides art-centered museum based programs to persons with dementia and their care partners. He is a founding member of the non-profit Hip Hop Public Health which uses music and multimedia lessons to encourage healthy lifestyles in multiple generations in families, and co-founded the startup NoMo Diagnostics which uses aims to improve the ability to detect sports-related concussions in real time. He is very excited for his older daughter who will be starting as an undergraduate at Emory in the fall at the Oxford campus.
